North Cornwall Adventure Guide

Pentire Point and The Rumps

September sunset, The Rumps 2023

I remember walking this section of the South West Coast Path vividly. It was the first of September 2023 and the tendrils of early evening were beginning to creep in as we made our way along the headland. It felt like we were stepping back in time. Jurassic park kind of vibes … you know what I mean?

We had the entire headland to ourselves as we ventured towards The Rumps, our wild camping spot for the night.

We set up camp in a perfectly pillowed hollow, cushioned with long grass, wrapped Gus up in his sleeping bag and enjoyed the most extraordinary sunset as we made supper.

This was the first (and only) evening I slept without the flysheet on my tent along the coast path. I found out that even on a balmy summer evening, everything dampens with dew.

Moon gazing through the fly sheet

I remember waking up in the night to the magic of the moon shining through the fly sheet.

So, the next time you find yourself in North Cornwall, if you do nothing else, take a walk around Pentire head. You can even stop for a dip at the secluded cove of Pentire Glaze Haven on your way back. And there’s a cafe at the start/end point too!)

Download the OS App to follow the route as you walk.
